Women of the Lighthouse

It's Saturday which means it's Saturday Snapshot time!  Saturday Snapshot is a great meme hosted by Alyce over at the blog, At Home With Books.   Check it out and see photos from all over our Big Blue Marble!

I love old photos and found this one in an aunt's album.  The road makes me think of the islands of Anguilla or Anegada but the lighthouse suggests the place is somewhere else entirely, perhaps in the States.  I'm thinking my aunt took the picture and that these were her friends but I'll probably never know since she's not around anymore.

I cropped the sheep out of the first which, I think, makes for a stronger composition.  What do you think?

  1. Lovely photo. And yes, it's better cropped.

    1. The aunt in whose album I found it left the BVI in the 1930s or 40s and died in New York in the early 60s. From her photos and from what her siblings have said about her, she liked to travel and often took weekend jaunts out of state.

  4. That lighthouse reminds me of Bodie Island lighthouse in North Carolina. I love old snapshots! It's sad that many people don't hold on to old family photos ... so much family history is lost when those old pictures get lost. You're lucky to have these! My husband has been completing geneology work on both sides of our family and we have found a wealth of info written on the backs of our family snapshots!

  5. It is stronger looking in the crop but I'm glad you included the sheep photo too as it lets the viewer know this was most likely a rural spot. It's wonderful that you have your aunts photos.

    1. On Tortola, livestock of some kind or another are always wandering around the public roads. I wish I could crop them out of real life as easily as I can in pictures. There's nothing like cattle or sheep in the road when you've got to get somewhere in a hurry!

  6. Great photo. Why don't people leave more details on photos. I guess we think we'll always be around to explain. Here's Mine

  7. I love old photos too and thinking about the story behind the photo.

  8. I do enjoy old photos and the stories that accompany them. I'm realizing, as I feature my various old shots, that there is no information on the backs of most of them. I have captions in my albums...and then on my computer. But some have nothing to place them in time...they're photos in boxes. I can guess on the ones in my lifetime, but not the others.

Thanks for sharing. The photo could be a centerpiece for a mystery story....

    1. There were no captions at all on hers but I have to confess that I don't put any on mine either. I need to get into the habit.

  10. What great pictures -- and I guess you'll just have to make up your own story for them.

  14. This is a terrific photo. I would say there is something artistically better about the cropped image -- like the angle of it or something like that -- it could easily be a book cover or something like that. Whereas, the fuller image, not so much.
Someone has just told a joke and the middle woman gets it best!

  15. I'm glad you liked it, Cipriano. Yes, the one at the end looks a bit apprehensive almost or like it wasn't really her type of joke.
